IT SEEMED TO TAKE HALF THE NIGHT TO work their way to where Emily used to play with her family in Central Park. Emily was back on Pegasus and trying to lead the group. But without a flashlight, and still no city lights to guide them, the way was dark and treacherous. The constant sound of the helicopters was a reminder of the danger they were in.
âYou sure you know where youâre going?â Joel asked.
âNot really,â Emily admitted. âItâs been years since Iâve been up this high in the park. But it shouldnât be much farther.â
As they picked their way through the trees, Pegasus suddenly stopped. His dark ears sprang forward and he pawed the ground. Diana also stopped. She held up her hand and listened.
âThere is someone moving ahead,â she said softly as she raised her brotherâs spear and prepared to fight.
âEm?â a voice called softly. âIs that you?â
âDad!â Emily responded. âDad, weâre here!â Weak with relief, she reached forward and patted Pegasusâs neck. âItâs all right, Pegs,â she said. âItâs my dad.â
Forgetting her wounded leg, Emily slid off the stallionâs back. But when her feet hit the ground, her leg gave out and she fell. Her father was at her side in an instant, taking her in his arms.
âOh, Em, Iâve been so worried about you!â
Emily put her arms around him and immediately felt better. âDad, Iâm so sorry I didnât tell you what was happening.â
âWhat is happening?â he asked. âEm, the cityâs in an uproar!â He looked at her bandaged leg. âAnd what happened to you?â
âDo you remember the night of the big storm?â Emily asked. âNot long after the Empire Stateâs top blew up, Pegasus was hit by lightning. He crashed down on our roof. Thatâs how I got my black eye. When I went to help him, his wing accidentally hit me.â
âPegasus?â her father repeated. âThat winged horse I heard about was the actual Pegasus from the Greek myths?â
âRoman,â Joel corrected, stepping out of the shadows. âAnd they arenât myths, theyâre all real. Iâm Joel, sir. A friend of Emilyâs from school.â
Emilyâs father shook Joelâs hand. Joel indicated Diana. âOfficer Jacobs, Iâd like to introduce you to another Olympian. This is Diana.â
âDiana? The Great Hunter?â Emilyâs father asked as he studied the tall woman.
Diana nodded formally. âOfficer Jacobs. It is an honor to meet the father of Emily.â
âCall me Steve,â her father said a little helplessly. He looked back to Emily. âI donât understand any of this,â he said. âWhatâs happening here? How and why are there Olympians in New York?â
Emily and Joel tried to explain as best as they could, right up to the point of being in the park.
âItâs hard to accept any of this.â Steve stared at Pegasus and shook his head. âIâd heard it was a white stallion you were riding today. What happened to him?â
âHe was white,â Emily said. âToo white. As he got better, Pegasus was starting to glow. So we dyed him black to try to hide him from the CRU.
